2A Bug List

Part 1: The Bug List

1.       The keys to my work building take too long to work, and I have to jingle them in the lock for up to a minute before the door opens
Why:  The keys/locks are old, and no one has replaced the system for many years
2.       The construction outside of my window wakes me up every morning, and there is a new sorority house being built across from mine.
Why: There is no way to minimize the sound of the construction, and the windows in my sorority house are old and do not block sound well.
3.       The hallway light in the sorority house is too bright at night and keeps people up
Why: There is no system in place to turn on the dimmed lights at night, and no one has ever brought up the issue before
4.       I can’t find any stylish shoes that are also comfortable.  Specifically, for wide feet
Why: stylish shoe companies for younger people to not prize comfort over style and are too lazy to try and accommodate both.
5.       The chairs in the UF lecture halls are squeaky and distracting
Why: UF will not replace them because they spend all of their money on the football program.
6.       There are not enough garbage cans in Anzo (a Mediterranean restaurant by my house), so when people unwrap straws at the drink station, they leave their wrappers on the counter.
Why: bad planning by Anzo, and perhaps they are prioritizing aesthetics over functionality
7.       There is not a recycling bin in the sorority house where I live, so people usually just throw out recyclable material instead of walking down the street to drop it in the bin
Why: Our house mom was too lazy to think of a better system
8.       My car takes too long to heat up during the cold months
It is a few years old and lacks the technology to heat up faster like other cars do.
9.       It is a pain in the neck to make my bed because it is lofted, and the corners are hard to reach
Why: I have to climb on top of my bed to make it, and so it constantly gets messed up instead of smoothed
10.   There is not enough counter space on my boyfriend’s sink so there is nowhere to store his bathroom items
Why: lack of shelving, bad planning by architects in the old house design
11.   I have to lug all my laundry down the stairs to the laundry room, it’s quite a hassle
Why: There is no system to transport the laundry down the stairs more efficiently
12.   At dinner time, we serve ice cream with disposable bowls and spoons which is very wasteful
Why: The chef/busboys do not want to wash every single bowl and spoon
13.   The traffic is very bad going down to south Florida on certain holiday weekends
Why: everyone is using the same roads and driving at the same time.  The roads are too narrow to accommodate everyone at once
14.   Most of the time, services such as Uber Eats or Postmates takes over an hour and a half to deliver food, even if the restaurant you’re ordering from is just a few miles away
Why: there lacks an efficient system to get drivers to quickly order and pick up the food
15.   I always find myself cramming in assignments and always procrastinate
Why: I haven’t found a good way to stay on top of my time and a system to keep me accountable
16.   The lines at Disney were so long last time I visited, that there was a two-hour minimum wait for every single ride at Hollywood Studios
Why: There are too many people being let into the park at once and not enough rides to spread people throughout the park
17.   There are never enough parking spots past 6:00pm for Gainesville street parking, so students often have to wake up before 7:30am and move their cars as to not get a ticket.
Why:  Too many people admitted to UF, too many apartment buildings being built, not enough parking garages
18.   It is hard for me to pay attention to online lectures, and I find myself getting distracted and not soaking in the material
Why: Online lectures are more impersonal and lack the element of engagement that in-person lectures have.
19.   A lot of packaging at the grocery store still uses Styrofoam, which is bad for the environment and does not biodegrade.
Why: Some companies do not care about the environment, and Styrofoam is a cheap option
20.   There are no coat rooms anywhere in Gainesville, so students must carry around their large jackets once they get inside because there is nowhere to put them
Why: Gainesville is in Florida, and people don’t consider it to have a cold enough winter to warrant coat rooms.

Part 2: Reflection
It was quite challenging coming up with a list of 20 bugs--not because there aren't any inconveniences in my day-to-day life, but because I don't usually pay mind to them.  Oftentimes, I will only think of an inconvenience when it is affecting me in the moment, but afterwards I will just forget about it.  That's because I don't usually think of ways to fix these "bugs" that I experience in my life.

  1. Hi Julianna, thank you for the detailed and environmentally-conscious bug list. There seem to be many foreseeable changes that can be made throughout to improve the process of your daily routine, especially around your sorority house. For the hallway light in your sorority house, it seems like the first step is communicating the feedback to see if dimmed lights can be implemented or less bright bulbs put in. I have not thought about the possibility of coat rooms before. I assume you are right, there is not much use in Florida. The problems with most foreseeable business solutions for them are related to the environment or traffic, in my view.

  2. Hi Julianna,
I enjoyed reading your list, as while I definitely have noticed some of these in my own life, you also had many that I would never experience, so your perspective was very interesting to me. I have the same feeling about online lectures too, there's something about being in the right environment that really stimulates my concentration. I also appreciate your conscientiousness towards environmental issues in your own life and the Gainesville community. Overall great list, thanks for sharing!
