21A Reading Reflection No. 2
1) The book I read was Mindset: How to fulfill your potential by Carol Dweck and the general theme was unsurprisingly about mindsets. She specifically focused on two types of mindsets fixed and growth and the theme of the book is how the growth mindset can help you achieve your goals and leaves you more satisfied. Whereas the fixed mindset keeps you in a place of being stagnant and under a lot of pressure.
2) I think the book connects to what I am learning because the growth mindset is all about taking full advantage of learning opportunities and not focusing on failure and I feel like that is a consistent theme in this course.
3) Something that the author did during her research on this topic was to interview kids and give them puzzles that were hard to see how they responded and to see what mindset they had. I think a similar concept could be applied in this class by giving students a difficult assignment to see how they respond. I think this could be helpful because we would be able to identify what mindset we currently have and try to shift more to a growth mindset.
4) I think when she was describing how people with the fixed mindset acted and thought through challenges I realized that I had a lot of the same habits. It was kind of a relief to realize that it was just a mindset that I had and not like there was a problem with me. I really liked that this book was motivational but not in a way that made you feel inadequate.
Hi Julianna, thank you for sharing. This book sounds really interesting. I would love to try the exercise that you proposed because now I'm curious which mindset I have! I think it is really important to always be striving for goals and continuously putting yourself out of your comfort size. These are some really interesting topics and I appreciate your input!
ReplyDeleteHi Julianna, thank you for providing a summary of the book. I would be curious to know what the author would think of the positive consequences of failure (learning and improving, growing in self-awareness, etc.) since they suggested we should not focus on it. Maybe they meant we should not dwell on it but look for the silver lining. It's good to see the book also revealed some of the habits you have that you would like to see improved. I am also curious as to what some of these habits were that reflected a fixed mindset.
